Concerning the Role

As a technical investigator for the Intelligence and Investigations team, your duties will include researching abuse patterns on OpenAI's products, writing and scaling detection to uncover abuse situations, and prototyping methods to find misuse of our products. Critical occurrences, particularly those that elude our current safety measures, will also be handled by you.


This position, which is headquartered in our San Francisco office, entails taking part in an on-call rotation where handling urgent situations after regular business hours may be required. Certain inquiries can have delicate topics, such as violent, sexual, or otherwise unsettling stuff.

In this position, you'll:

Recognize, address, and escalate situations related to safety


Create new strategies for growing our detection, with a focus on automating and enhancing our coverage through language models.

Enhance our issue management, triage, and alerting procedures in particular.

Work together with the product, legal, and policy teams to establish data-driven policies that effectively manage risk.

Build solutions in conjunction with engineering, law enforcement, and security teams to effectively limit misuse on a large scale.
In this position, you could succeed if you:

possess a minimum of four years' experience in technical analysis, with a focus on SQL and Python


possess at least two years of expertise creating novel detection methods and carrying out unrestricted research to address issues in the actual world.

possess a minimum of two years' worth of expertise automating and scaling processes, particularly using language models

possess a background in trust and safety, as well as close experience working with engineering teams, policy enforcement, and/or policy

Possess fundamental data engineering skills, such as creating core tables or pipelines (writing production code or constructing infrastructure is not anticipated).
Between $220 and $340k
